Harness are a kind of horse tack that allow a horse to pull various types of horse-drawn carriages. The collection of harness at the Royal Mews is probably the finest in the world and includes many sets of historic State Harness.

Many of these harness were specially made for important occasions, such as the richly decorated Black Horse Harness made for the coronation of William IV in 1831. Part of the job for many Mews staff is to clean and maintain these historic pieces. Sometimes these important harness break and need replacing, so they are taken to the Saddler's Workshop.
