The Royal Mews now contains one of the finest collections of working carriages in the world. It is very important when the team restore these carriages in the Mews workshop that only the traditional types of craftsmanship are used to work on them. These methods often take a long time and a lot of patience.

In 1988, the Irish State Coach was brought into the workshop for a complete repaint, overhaul and refurbishment. The project took nearly eighteen months and included many sleepless nights for the team. However, by November 1989, The Queen was able to travel to Westminster for the State Opening of Parliament in the Irish State Coach.
